About the artist

ARTIST

Austin Camilleri is a freelance visual artist lives in Gozo and works internationally.

Camilleri was born into a family of artists, he studied at the University of Malta and at the Accademia Pietro Vannucci in Perugia, after being awarded a four-year scholarship in 1991. He is the founder of 356, founding member of StArt, Fundazzjoni Klula and Istra - foundation for art and research, and is a visiting lecturer at the Faculty of Built Environment, University of Malta. He has also designed books, campaigns, awards as well as stage sets for operas, theatre and dance pieces.

He has exhibited in the Venice Biennale, Ostrale Biennale in Dresden, the Mediterranean Biennale in Tunis, ArtRaker Biennale in Valletta, Biennale for Young Artists in Rome and in Art Knows no Frontiers in Trier.

His works have been shown at the Kalmar Konstmuseum in Kalmar, at the WTC in Stockholm, Sweden; the Visual Arts Gallery in New Delhi, India, the Henderson Center in Beijing, China; at the BOZAR, Centrale Electrique, Musee Botanique and Place Fontainas in Brussels, Belgium; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Cluj-Napoca, Romania; Apollonia in Strasbourg, Galerie GNG in Paris and Fondation Villa Datris in L’Isle sur la Sorgue, France; Palais Liechtenstein in Feldkirch, Austria; the Vatican Museum and in Macro Ex-Mattatoio in Rome,Villa Barabaro di Maser, and at the Museo Archeoligico complex, Lipari, Museo Civico in Nichelino, Biblioteca Universitaria, Torino, Biblioteca Nazionale in Rome and in Cosenza, Italy; at the UN Building and SAI Gallery in New York, USA; St.James Palace in London, UK; the Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland; at Inguat, Guatemala City, Guatemala; in Grote Kerk and in NEST, the Hague, Holland; Chiesa Santa Chiara, Republic of San Marino; at Beith Shemesh, Jerusalem, Isreal; at Palais Kherredine in Tunis and Palais Abdelliya in Marsa, Tunisia; at the Munchen Kunstelerhaus in Munich, Galerie Bagnato and Kulturzentrum in Konstanz, Germany; in Watergate, Rijeka2020, Croatia; in Plac Ducha, Krakow, Poland; the National Museum of Fine Arts, Maritime Museum, Museum of Archeology, St James Cavalier and Malta Contemporary Art Foundation in Malta.

His work has been published in books and publications internationally and found in public spaces, public, corporate and private collections worldwide.

Apart from major territorial temporary installations, Camilleri has produced various public sculptures, namely:

  • Zieme, considered to be one of Malta’s most important artworks;
  • Voyage, in Woerden, the Netherlands;
  • Eye of Osiris, at Fondation Datris in L’isle sur la Sorgue, France
  • Blata, at the Garden of Nations in Ramallah, Palestine Territories
  • the 3 Bronze Portals at the Shrine of Divine Mercy in Naxxar
  • and the architectural project Bl-Ohla dawl Libbist that won the international call for proposals for an artistic statement to the Maltese Republic and is currently in the process of implementation.

Camilleri lives in Gozo and works between Malta and Italy.

 

ARCHITECT

Andrew Sultana is an Architect and Civil Engineer with fifteen years of experience working alongside the foremost Maltese architectural firms. Andrew specializes in architectural design and is responsible for the execution of noteworthy architectural projects at various stages including planning, statutory approval, and detail design. His portfolio includes residential, commercial and mixed-use projects with a particular emphasis on sites within sensitive historical context. Andrew graduated with a Bachelor in Architecture and Civil Engineering (Honours) from the University of Malta in 2006 and has been a warranted perit and full member of Kamra tal-Periti since 2007.

In the past Andrew has collaborated with Austin Camilleri in the realization of several of the artist’s installations.

 

STRUCTURAL ENGINEER

Andrea Raffaelli is a freelance engineer since 1997 and full member of Ordine degli Ingegneri di Lucca al n. A1115. He has vast experience in civil and industrial design and certification and art-structure consultancy. In collaboration with del Chiaro, Ing Raffealli created the structures for complex installation’s such as Giuseppe Penone’s ‘Idee di Pietra’, Ivan Theimer’s monumental sculpture group ‘Les Portes pour la Vandée’, Saddam Hussein’s statue in Iraq and Bonanno Pisano’s ‘Porta di San Ranieri’.

 

HEALTH & SAFETY

Aldo Busuttil founder and director of AME Health & Safety Services Ltd. Set up in 2004 as one of the first Maltese companies to offer comprehensive health and safety support services, AME have a wealth of experience in the private sector and government projects. AME is accredited with multiple ISO Certificates in Quality Management Systems, OHS Management Systems and Environmental Management Systems.

 

BRONZE FOUNDRY

Michele Del Chiaro’s long experience and proven worth using the ancient method of "lost wax", (the only method of production he endorses, a process which he has successfully employed since 1948), has earned the art foundry an international reputation for thoroughness and for the highest quality of works of art. Fonderia Michele Del Chiaro, located in Pietrasanta, the tuscan ‘sculptural region’, has collaborated with the major contemporary artists from around the world and is one of the top art foundries worldwide.
