EcoMedIslands Project

The EcoMedIslands project, a Mediterranean initiative aimed at strengthening circular waste management on island territories, was officially launched in Gozo on 28–29 October 2025. Co-funded by the Interreg Euro-MED Programme, the project brings together 11 partners from seven countries to develop smarter, more efficient and sustainable waste systems across the region.

What the Project Means for Gozo

Gozo has been selected as a pilot area and will introduce an innovative underground waste management system in a zone with a high concentration of holiday apartments and significant seasonal waste generation.

The system, equipped with IoT sensors that monitor fill levels in real time, will enable optimised waste collection schedules, reducing unnecessary trips and lowering emissions.

Supported by the Gozo Tourism Association, this initiative aims to reduce waste overflow, improve overall cleanliness, and enhance the separation of recyclable materials.

A Mediterranean Effort

Alongside Gozo, pilot activities will also take place in Greece, Croatia, Italy and Cyprus. The project will run for 45 months, focusing on analysing waste patterns, testing innovative technologies, and transferring successful solutions to other Mediterranean islands.
